The bottom line

If you want a dab rig that you can take with you on the go, the Seahorse Pro Plus definitely does the job.

It isn’t as flavorful and it doesn’t have the same vapor quality as a good desktop rig, but if your sole goal is to get maximum effects from your wax or concentrates, this device will do that.

Things that I like about the Seahorse Pro Plus are that it’s easily portable, can produce a lot of vapor, and it hits like a freight train. Things that I don’t like are the conspicuous colors and design, the lack of temperature control, the harshness of the vapor, and the lack of flavor.

For a portable dabbing device, the Seahorse Pro Plus is good, but if you’re not planning on taking it out of the house, there are better devices available.

Product Overview

The Seahorse Pro Plus is a portable dab pen by LOOKAH . The company is known for their many 510 thread batteries, dry herb vapes, electric dab rigs, and accessories, but their dab pens are particularly popular.

Instead of setting up and using a large dab rig or e-nail, the Sea Horse Pro Plus makes things easy. Just hold the coil close to your concentrates, press the button, and inhale. This portability and ease of use are big reasons why the Seahorse Pro Plus has become popular, and this simplicity is also what caught my attention.

The Seahorse Pro Plus is the successor to the Seahorse Pro. It is larger and offers several upgrades over the previous version. It now has Type-C charging, a new Seahorse V coil, and a magnetic coil cap.

The Seahorse Pro Plus has three different voltage modes, manual and session heating, and a 650mAh battery. It can also be used as a 510-thread battery by removing the coil and attaching a cartridge.

Is the Seahorse Pro Plus worth getting if you’re a concentrate user? How are the flavor and vapor? Is it reliable? I’ll answer all these questions and more in this in-depth review.

Design & Build Quality

  • Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus - 1

The Sea Horse Pro Plus is made of plastic and glass. Plastic is used for most of the device, while glass is used for most of the vapor pathway, as well as for the magnetic coil cap. Due to the sheer amount of plastic, the Seahorse Pro Plus looks and feels a little cheap.

It’s also not the most discreet device out there because a) most of the colors are very vibrant, and b) the unique shape and design of the device, as well as the way that it functions, are sure to attract attention.

The magnetic cap, coil, and glass tube are removable for easy cleaning.

An LED ring surrounds the button on the front of the device. This LED ring indicates which of the three voltage settings you’re in (blue, purple, or white). It also flashes when the battery is low. On the back of the device is a Type-C charging port, an upgrade over the Micro-USB charging on the Seahorse Pro.

The coil here is an upgraded Seahorse Coil V, which is made of quartz. The coil simply screws on or off of the 510 connector on the bottom of the device. For safety purposes, there’s a magnetic glass cap that can be placed over the coil when it’s not in use. I like the convenience of the magnetic cap and it’s very quick to take it on or off.

Portability

Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus - 5

The Seahorse Pro Plus is a portable dabbing device and a 510 battery in one. Its size also falls between a dabbing rig and a 510 battery, although it’s closer in size to the latter.

At 150.6mm tall, 35mm wide, and 19.4mm deep, it’s slightly larger than the Seahorse Pro and much taller than most 510 batteries. However, compared to desktop dab rigs, the Seahorse Pro Plus is comparatively small, and it only weighs 75g. That’s the big pro of this device; it’s powerful enough to dab with but small enough to carry around easily.

Since this is a dabbing device, after all, it’s inherently not suitable for use while on the go. You will have to stop, pull out your jar of concentrates, heat up the device, and touch the coil to your material. In this regard, it’s no better than a desktop rig, but it’s easier to carry with you for sure.

How to use the Seahorse Pro Plus

Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus - 13

The Seahorse Pro Plus has three different voltage settings and two different modes (or ways that it can be used). First, turn on the device by pressing the button five times quickly. To change the voltage output, press the button twice. The LED will light up in one of three colors:

  • Blue: 3.2V
  • Purple: 3.6V
  • White: 4.2V

The Seahorse Pro Plus can be used in two different modes: manual or session.

Manual mode: Press and hold the button for seconds to heat up the coil. Then, continue to hold the button. Lightly press the coil to your wax or concentrates, and inhale on the mouthpiece.

In manual mode, the coil will only heat up while you hold the button.

Session mode: Press the button three times to activate session mode. The device will preheat for fifteen seconds, and the LED will flash while preheating. You can press the button to cycle between the three voltage settings (blue, purple, and white).

Once preheating is finished, the LED will remain solid and maintain heating automatically for thirty seconds. You can press the coil to your material, and inhale on the mouthpiece. You do not need to hold the button like in manual mode.

After thirty seconds, the device will stop heating and return to manual mode.

510 Battery Functionality

Removing the coil allows you to use the Seahorse Pro Plus as a 510 battery. All that you have to do is unscrew the coil and screw in a 510 cart.

It’s a bit awkward because your cartridge ends up being upside down when you draw, but it still works well. Using session mode is not recommended with a cart.

How to use the Seahorse Pro Plus with a Water Pipe

The packaging includes a hose adapter that can be attached to your existing water pipe. Attach one end of the hose to the mouthpiece of the Seahorse Pro Plus, and the other end into your water pipe.

Then, heat up the device (either manually by pressing the button or by activating session mode) and place the coil to your wax/concentrates.

The Seahorse Pro Plus is very easily usable and maneuverable with a water pipe, and it feels more like a desktop experience when used this way. You have to take care not to bend the hose, but otherwise, I found it to be a straightforward experience.

The water allows the vapor to cool down, which is nice, especially since the short vapor path on the Seahorse Pro Plus can produce some pretty hot and harsh vapor when used alone.

Battery life

Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus - 4

The battery in this device is a 650mAh cell which will last for somewhere around thirty quick sessions. Expect to get less usage time if you use session mode or if you do longer sessions in manual mode.

When the battery is low, the indicator light will flash red eight times. Disappointingly, there’s no way to check the battery charge status before this, so it can run out of battery unexpectedly. That’s not great, especially if you’re taking it with you out of the house.

While charging, the indicator light will flash red. When fully charged, the indicator light will light up a solid CYAN color.

Performance & Vapor Quality

Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus - 7

The Seahorse Pro Plus is the type of device that is perfect for ripping huge dabs and getting the maximum effects from your material. If all you care about is getting as lifted as possible off your wax or concentrates, then this device will suit you just fine. This is what it does best: heat up a bunch of material and deliver huge hits.

However, if you like to taste all of the flavors in your material and like a smooth draw, this is not the device for you. The vapor is rather harsh, especially if used without a water pipe, and the flavor is not great. Since the quartz tip heats up by way of voltage and is not temperature controlled, it can become extremely hot. When touched to your wax, flavors are lost due to the high temperature.

I got the best flavor and smoother draws by setting the voltage output to blue (3.2V), using manual mode, and drawing through my water pipe. The purple and white voltage settings greatly reduce the flavor, while at the same time increasing the harshness of the vapor.

Using Manual mode allows me to heat the coil up sparingly; just enough to vaporize my material but not hot enough to burn up all of the terpenes and flavor. In my experience, session mode gets the coil too hot and reduces the vapor quality. If you’re not careful, it can also use a lot of material.

Verdict

Circling back to the question I posed in the product overview, is the Seahorse Pro Plus worth getting if you’re a concentrate user?
