The bottom line

The DOJO SPHERE S is a good step forward in DOJO’s SPHERE series, trading the flashy 360 display of the SPHERE X for a more elegant, clean, and minimalistic design.

Its standout feature, SMART mode, automatically adjusts power based on how hard you inhale, and it works very well. It feels intuitive and natural to use, to the point where you don’t even have to think about it for it to work as intended. Draw lightly as you would from a puff here and there, and the draw is less intense. Draw harder and you get more vapor and a denser puff.

Battery life is excellent, lasting several days per charge, which is great for a 1000mAh capacity disposable. The flavors are also great, and the lineup has something for everyone, whether you like fruit, ice, candy, or a tobacco flavor.

Independent airflow control with a third, tighter airflow setting, along with 2A charging, would make the SPHERE S nearly perfect. However, as it stands, the SPHERE S is still one of the best disposables on the market for MTL vapers who don’t particularly like a very tight draw.

Highly recommended.

Product Overview

The DOJO SPHERE S is the tenth product from DOJO, and the second in their SPHERE series of devices. DOJO’s first device, the SPHERE X, was released just over a year ago, and its performance, design, and build quality immediately grabbed my attention. I knew then that DOJO would be popular, and ten devices and one year later, they’re still here and evidently going strong.

The SPHERE S features a unique ‘leather starlight grip’, which is LED lighting reminiscent of the SPHERE X, but thankfully more toned down and elegant. It also features two output modes, ECO and SMART, the latter of which automatically adjusts the power output based on how strongly you inhale.

Other highlights include a 1000mAh battery, 20ml of e-juice for up to 40000 puffs, e-juice and battery level displays, and two-mode adjustable airflow. The SPHERE S is available in 5% nicotine strength and 17 flavors.

DOJO’s products have proven to be a treat to review, and I’ve been happily puffing away on the SPHERE S for the last two weeks. But is it the right disposable vape for you? Read on to learn who it’s for, who it isn’t, and whether it’s worth the money.

Design & Build Quality

  • DOJO SPHERE S - 4

The SPHERE S is very compact and minimalistic—a significant change from the chunky design and in-your-face lighting of the SPHERE X. It’s 87mm tall, 53.4mm wide, and 30mm thick, and thanks to the rounded sides and edges, it fits comfortably and neatly in my hand. The SPHERE X just feels good to hold; I don’t have to scrunch my hand up to get a grip, but it’s not too large or heavy either.

While the hand feel is great, the design is honestly even better. It looks like what a particular tech company with a fruit for a logo would design if it got into the vaping business. It’s a brilliantly simple but attractive design.

Most of the shell is plastic, but it doesn’t make the SPHERE S feel cheap. Complementing the shell is a leather grip that is the same color as the plastic, which wraps around the side and front of the device. The leather features a small chrome DOJO logo, along with many tiny triangle cutouts and impressions.

  • DOJO SPHERE S - 12

Through these tiny cutouts, the LED lighting comes to life, lighting up each time you change modes or take a draw. Unlike the bright and attention-grabbing 360 display on the SPHERE X, the LEDs here are not too bright and are very elegant. Even in the dark, the LEDs aren’t blinding, so you won’t look like you’re holding a portable lighthouse.

In ECO mode, only half of the LEDs are active. In SMART mode, all of the LEDs light up. Along with the mode display, this makes it simple to know which mode you’re in without flipping the device over to look at the mode selection switch.

The display shows a battery percentage at the top, a mode indicator in the middle, and an e-juice percentage at the bottom. You don’t need much more than that on a disposable vape, and the way it’s displayed here is clean, neat, and to the point.

  • DOJO SPHERE S - 6

A nice feature is the slightly soft mouthpiece. It has a clear rubber coating, which not only feels better than hard, solid plastic but also allows for a few hands-free puffs if the need arises.

The bottom of the SPHERE S has the mode selection switch, which also doubles as the airflow control switch. The airflow is tied to the mode; ECO mode has two airflow holes open and delivers a mouth-to-lung draw. SMART mode has three airflow holes open for a looser mouth-to-lung draw.

I would rather have an airflow slider independent of the power modes, but as it is here, the airflow and power match up well, so I won’t knock off too many points. But be warned, if you like a tight MTL draw, you’re out luck.

Features

DOJO SPHERE S - 3

The DOJO SPHERE S’ SMART mode is super unique, and (to my knowledge) it’s the first of its kind on a disposable vape. Rather than having two modes, one low and one high, SMART mode automatically adjusts the power output based on how strongly you inhale. This means you can inhale lightly for a less powerful draw, or harder for a more intense one, all without switching the mode.

It works well, too, and it feels natural to use. If I’m at my desk working and want to take a ‘maintenance draw’, I typically don’t draw too hard. However, those times when I’m after a stronger puff, I’ll naturally draw harder on the device. It works without thinking about it, which is convenience at its best.

The other mode, ECO, is a tighter draw at a lower wattage, producing less vapor and a less dense draw. This mode doesn’t adjust the power output based on the strength of your draw, so it’s helpful to conserve battery life, or just if you’re looking for some consistency.

The SPHERE S is rated to provide up to 40,000 puffs, but this is only if you use it exclusively in ECO mode. Since the power output varies in SMART mode, DOJO doesn’t provide any estimates for how many puffs to expect if using that mode, but I would guess it’s somewhere around twenty-five thousand.

Flavors

DOJO SPHERE S - 1

There are seventeen flavors available for the SPHERE S:

  • Blue Razz Ice
  • Blueberry Watermelon
  • Clear
  • Fcuking Fab
  • Frozen Banana
  • Georgia Peach
  • Hawaii Dream
  • Juicy Grape
  • Mexico Mango
  • Miami Mint
  • Pink Lemonade
  • Sour Gush
  • Strawberry Banana
  • Strawberry Ice
  • Tobacco
  • Watermelon Ice
  • White Gummy

I like the variety here. There’s a Clear flavor (basically pure cooling with no flavor), a tobacco flavor, many different fruit flavors, some candy flavors, and some ice options. All this to say, there’s bound to be a flavor that piques your interest.

I’m going to describe how three of these flavors taste to me and what I think of them. However, keep in mind that just because I like a flavor, that does not mean that you will like it. Similarly, if I don’t like a flavor, this does not mean that you will not like it. This is solely my subjective opinion.

Hawaii Dream

This flavor is very sweet and has some noticeable cooling, too. It’s also a little tangy and sour, but very slightly so. It’s a mix of tropical fruits like orange, pineapple, and mango, and they’re mixed really nicely in this flavor. This is definitely one to try if you’re a fan of fruit-flavored vapes.

Fcuking Fab

Orange and peach notes are strong here, and there’s quite a bit of sourness, but it’s really tasty. The cooling is about the same level as Hawaii Dream, so it’s noticeable but not overwhelming. It’s similarly sweet and at a level that’s right about where I like it.

Blue Razz Ice

I like the level of sweetness that DOJO has been maintaining for these flavors. Blue Razz Ice is, again, just sweet enough that it tastes good and is enjoyable to vape on, but it’s not sweet enough to make me feel sick after vaping it for hours. The coolness is a little more present than the other two flavors, but still tolerable. This flavor is slightly tart; just enough to add another dimension to the flavor.

How long do they last?

DOJO SPHERE S - 7

The DOJO SPHERE S’ battery capacity has actually been downgraded from the SPHERE X, down to 1000mAh from 1100mAh. However, a charge seems to last forever, and I’ve been getting three to four days per charge, which is very good battery life for a 1000mAh cell.

I noted the e-juice usage on my Blue Razz Ice device, and used 39% e-juice before I had to charge for the first time. I used ECO mode for the majority of the time, with very little SMART mode usage. Following this, I used 45% e-juice before I had to charge for the second time. This time, I used SMART mode more and took longer, harder draws to test out how the mode worked.

The SPHERE S only supports 1A charging, which is a shame, so it takes just over an hour (1hr 5min) for a full charge of the 1000mAh cell. There is pass-through charging, so it can be used while it charges.

How do they vape?

DOJO SPHERE S - 5

I’ve been really, really liking my time with the SPHERE S. Although it’s only available in 5% nicotine strength, ECO mode keeps the draw smooth and satisfying, but not too powerful for someone like myself who prefers lower strength disposables.

Even SMART mode is good thanks to the variable power output. Lighter puffs feel like ECO mode, with the option of drawing harder for a denser and higher-powered draw.

Airflow goes from MTL (mouth-to-lung) in ECO mode to a loose MTL in SMART mode. The draw is a bit too loose for my liking in SMART, and even ECO mode feels like it could be tighter. The airflow matches the strength of the draw, which is great, but a third, tighter MTL airflow setting would have been nice to have.

Verdict
