The bottom line

Having used and enjoyed almost every XROS device since the very first, I wasn’t too worried that I would encounter a massive turn-off in the Pro 2. VAPORESSO has been around for a long time and knows a lot about making a good pod vape, all of which is very evident here.

The new COREX 3.0 pods/coils are fantastic, producing vibrant flavors, deep aromas, and consistent clouds of vapor. They last well, at least two weeks each in my experience, and as long as you don’t make silly mistakes, are almost totally leak-free. They are available in a good range of resistances, compatible with wattage from 5W to 30W, so both MTL and RDL vapers should be able to find their perfect setup.

The device is well-made and nicely designed. It isn’t bright and flashy, just stylish and thoughtfully built. The TFT display is large enough and crisp enough to be read easily, but remains discreet and doesn’t light up like a Christmas tree with every puff. It gives access to all the settings an MTL/RDL pod vaper could want with simple controls, and even provides extras like a puff history.

I’m never a huge fan of animated displays and themes, and I’m unlikely to be the true target audience for such things, but I have no problem seeing them in a vape. As long as animations aren’t there in place of more useful adjustability settings (no such issue here) and there is the option to disable them for the sake of battery life (there is), I’m not going to hold it against the Pro 2 for offering them.

The VAPORESSO Pro 2 should be high on the most-wanted list of any vaper who wants a combination of great flavor, solid reliability, easy operation, and strong adjustability in their pod vape.

Product Overview

VAPORESSO’s XROS range is almost certainly their most successful and has been a favorite of pod vapers for several years. While the standard models, such as the XROS 5 and XROS Nano, almost always deliver the goods, the Pro version quickly became the way to go if you wanted that little bit more quality and adjustability.

The Pro 2 is the newest addition to the XROS family of pod vapes, and a significant update to the previous Pro model. It features such luxuries as aircraft-grade materials, a nearly 1-inch tall TFT display, and a big bump in battery capacity from 1200mAh to 2000mAh. It also helps, alongside the XROS 5, to usher in the latest coil technology upgrade with COREX 3.0.

As a fan of the original XROS Pro, I was keen to get my hands (and lips) on this upgraded vape to see just how big those promised improvements were. And that is exactly what I have been lucky enough to have been doing for the last couple of weeks. Here’s my take on the VAPORESSO XROS Pro 2.

Design & Build Quality

  • VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 13

The latest addition to the XROS family uses the now familiar tall and slim form factor favored by its siblings and most other pod vapes. It is slightly bulkier than the standard XROS vapes, but has almost identical dimensions to the first XROS Pro device, coming in at just under 126mm tall with the pod inserted, 26mm wide, and 18.4mm deep.

The bulk of the body is made from a strong magnesium alloy, with hardened plastic on the front face, where the button and screen are located. This mix of strong but light materials helps the vape feel sturdy, while only weighing 65g. The overall design is a mix of straight edges, rounded corners, and convex panels, which not only make the device comfortable to hold and easy to grip but also make it more than just a simple lump of metal and plastic.

  • VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 17

As mentioned above, the front face is where you’ll find the button, which is used to both fire the device and adjust the settings, and the almost 1-inch tall TFT display. On the opposite face is the adjustable airflow slider and a small engraved VAPORESSO logo (overall, the branding on this device is very subtle). As is frustratingly common for someone who likes to have their vape stood up when charging, the USB Type-C port is located on the bottom.

There are seven different color options to choose from, ranging from Glittering Black (which is not glittery) to Gem Green and Dawn Purple. In the main, the colors are pretty subtle, as are the faint patterns on the plastic panels, but all of them look great. These devices have a distinctly “premium” look overall. The full color range includes:

  • Glittering Gold
  • Glittering Silver
  • Glittering Black
  • Storm Blue
  • Gem Green
  • Moonlit Pink
  • Dawn Purple

Pods

  • VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 14

VAPORESSO XROS top-fill pods have long been a favorite of mine, and thanks to some incremental improvements, the latest version that you get with this device hasn’t changed my mind. The standard pods have a 3ml capacity (2ml in TPD countries), and you get two different resistance versions with the XROS Pro 2 kit: 0.4Ω and 0.6Ω. It seems likely that VAPORESSO has also made kits that contain other resistances, but I have to go on the devices I received for review.

Compatible replacement pods are available in 0.4Ω, 0.6Ω, 0.8Ω, 1.0Ω, and 1.2Ω resistances, and in either 2ml or 3ml e-liquid capacity. All of them, whether talking about the included pods or replacements bought in the near future, have been upgraded with the latest COREX 3.0 technology.

Pods featuring COREX 3.0 use coils with a new Hive Mesh structure, custom chimney design, and aerospace-grade materials. All of this is designed to deliver even richer flavor and aroma from your favorite e-liquid, and smooth, consistent lungfuls of vapor. VAPORESSO claims that, compared to COREX 2.0, the latest version produces 40% more aroma, 30% more flavor, and a 30% improvement in smoothness and performance stability.

VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 16

While I can’t confirm those percentages, when testing pods with version 2.0 and 3.0 side-by-side, I could definitely tell the difference. The 3.0 flavor was richer and more complex, letting me taste flavors in my vape juice that I had hardly noticed before. The pods also last well, stay consistent, and don’t suffer from leaking during normal use. To my mind, these are easily some of the best pods available right now.

I do have to admit a slight issue I had with one of the pods, which saw it dump half of its contents out through the airflow channels until it was leaking out of the airflow slider itself. Confused, I looked closer and noticed that I hadn’t clipped the mouthpiece back on properly after filling. This means that there was no seal created and no vacuum formed inside the pod, which normally prevents this from happening. Definitely user error rather than a problem with the pod, and after drying the device and refilling the pod, it all worked perfectly.

Features

  • VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 18

As you might expect from a “Pro” vape, the XROS Pro 2 has quite a few bells and whistles. Most are essential to making the device adjustable, usable, and appealing to users with different vaping requirements, while a few are more frivolous or concerned purely with personal style. All will be expected by users looking for a more advanced pod vape experience.

The vape can be fired automatically by drawing on the mouthpiece (seemingly the default setup) or by pressing the fire button (which, on my device, I had to enable in the settings).

The nearly 1-inch tall TFT screen displays all of the information you could want, including battery level, wattage, puff count, and resistance. Tap the button twice and you’ll be able to choose between six different screen styles, each of which animates when the vape fires. You can, of course, turn animations off in the settings, accessed by pressing the button four times.

You’ll also find things like the screen lock and button lock options in the settings, as well as tools to clear the puff counter and view puff history (yes, you can see how many you have taken today and how that compares with previous days). The TFT display isn’t super-bright, but it is crisp and clear, and it’s always easy to find the information you are looking for.

A slightly more interesting and unique addition to the Pro 2 is Super Pulse Mode, something more commonly only found in tank mods. This feature works like the Pulse Mode of previous models, but more so. It is designed to provide more consistent power and vapor output by pulsing the power throughout your draw on the vape and throughout the length of a full battery charge. Although you don’t really notice Super Pulse Mode working in real time, the Pro 2 certainly delivers consistent vapor and flavor, even when the battery is close to dying.

As is almost certainly expected by anyone who has used a pod vape before now, both the wattage and airflow are adjustable. The wattage will auto-adjust based on the resistance of the pod you are using, but can then be tweaked within a prescribed range. Low resistance pods like the 0.4Ω version, for example, can be used between 15W and 30W. For added power accuracy, the power adjusts in half-watt increments.

Battery Life & Charging

VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 9

Aside from the update to COREX 3.0 and the addition of Super Pulse Mode, the other notable upgrade from the previous XROS Pro is the battery. Gone is the 1200mAh cell of the older model, replaced by a pleasingly large 2000mAh battery. That’s a capacity increase of 67%. VAPORESSO batteries have long been pretty reliable, and that hasn’t changed here.

A full charge, using the 0.4Ω pod at 25W, lasted me a day and a half on average. Bearing in mind that when I’m testing a vape, my usage is probably more intense than the average pod vaper, that’s a good result. If you are using a higher-resistance pod at a lower power setting, I can easily see the battery lasting for the full two days that VAPORESSO suggests it should.

The battery life readout on the display seems pretty accurate, as does the readout that shows charge time remaining whenever the device is plugged into the wall. The USB Type-C port on the bottom of the device is rated as 2A, so you get full fast charging. During my days of testing the XROS Pro 2, a full charge from dead took an average of 35 minutes, and a quick top-up from 70% often took under 10 minutes.

Performance

VAPORESSO XROS PRO 2 - 21

VAPORESSO describes the XROS Pro 2 as an MTL device, and while it is undoubtedly aimed more at MTL vapers, it is perfectly possible to vape RDL with it if you choose the right setup. I tested it for both vaping styles and was happy with how it handled each of them.

The draw is relatively tight, even with the airflow fully open, but not as tight as a pure MTL device might be. Although the airflow slider is pretty wide, the two air inlets aren’t very big, and there is not as much difference between open and closed as some users might like. RDL vapers will almost certainly want it all the way open, and combine that with the 0.4Ω or 0.6Ω coils. These will allow for the sort of wattage RDL needs.

I tested the vape with both freebase and nic salts, in a couple of different strengths and PG/VG ratios. When using the appropriate setup for all combinations (e.g., lower power and higher resistance for nic salts, high power and low resistance for freebase), the Pro 2 worked brilliantly. As mentioned above, the COREX 3.0 coils produce exceptional flavor, and the Super Pulse Mode ensures every lungful is smooth and consistent.

The pods, overall, are excellent. The true top-fill design means that they are easy to fill without getting vape juice everywhere, and they remain free from leaks when sealed properly. During two weeks of testing, I switched between the two pods that came with my kit daily, and both are still going strong. There is no noticeable loss of flavor, no leaking, and both seem as efficient as they did on day one.
